Children's Dental Services
At each stage of life, the focus of dental care shifts slightly, so it is important to find a dentist who can treat the whole family. Dr. Gulati has experience working with people of all ages, so she understands the particular needs of each family member.
Dental Hygiene Education for Parents
With children, it is important to start healthy dental practices early. Childhood cavities are far too common, so proper care should start as soon as a baby’s first tooth appears. Parents should begin gently brushing a baby’s teeth, using a toothbrush with warm water and a smear of toothpaste. Around age 2, the amount of toothpaste can be increased to the size of a pea, since this is the age when most children are able to spit.
Unfortunately, many parents lay their babies down to sleep with a convenient bottle full of milk or juice. When the sugars from these drinks are allowed to sit on a baby’s teeth, they can dissolve tooth enamel. The results are discolored or pitted teeth, and in severe cases, some very young children wind up having teeth pulled prematurely as a result.
Preventative Children’s Dentistry Starts Early
Dr. Gulati sees children as young as 2 or 3 years old, so parents should make that first appointment early. At the first visit, Dr. Gulati will help educate parents over good dental hygiene practices and will conduct an exam to identify problems. Her goal is to make that first visit a positive experience for the child.
Dr. Gulati tries to make a child’s treatments as comfortable as possible. Since children tend to be squeamish about shots, she does surface fillings without shots whenever possible. In other instances, she will numb the gums for more gentle care. She also gives her young patients a goody bag after each visit, so they have something to look forward to. She wants the whole experience to be fun and free of any anxiety.
Also, by visiting regularly as a young child, it becomes easier to identify potential problems, such as teeth that are coming in crooked or misaligned, so that treatment can be recommended and prepared for in advance. With detailed gentle care and preventative measures, Liberty Dental has become a leading children’s dentist in Fremont, CA.
